Transforming Legacy into the Future – CERMAC Laboratory Redesign
The CERMAC Laboratory project is rooted in the philosophy of breathing new life into old industrial spaces, restoring their dignity while propelling them into the future. We take pride in recognizing the potential of existing structures, and this transformation embodies our commitment to blend the old with the new in a thoughtful, innovative way.
The core concept preserves the original shape of the factory building while integrating modern design elements that elevate both its form and function. A key feature is the introduction of a transparent, lightweight polycarbonate volume that wraps around the existing structure like a second skin, refreshing the building’s identity. This translucent layer enhances natural light flow while clearly defining the interior spaces.

The polycarbonate volume extends beyond the ground floor, creating a sheltered porch that encourages movement and provides protection from the elements. The ground floor is further defined by perforated metal sheets, allowing light to softly filter through while maintaining privacy and screening the ground-floor offices.

Refurbishing old industrial spaces is more than preservation—it's about transforming history into future-forward environments, blending the past with cutting-edge design and innovation.
The factory’s main body is clad in semi-mirrored metal panels that reflect the precision and advanced technologies developed by CERMAC. This metallic skin adds a sleek, futuristic aesthetic while subtly nodding to the building’s industrial heritage.
Special emphasis is placed on the entrance, conceived as a separate architectural object with a strong, independent identity. This entrance volume, cantilevered and supported by two robust, material blocks, creates a striking and welcoming space. Beneath the cantilever, a metallic wall serves as the backdrop for the CERMAC logo, reinforcing the brand's presence. The entire composition is harmonized with the inclusion of a green, perennial garden, bringing nature into the industrial environment and softening the space.
Finally, the iconic cantilevered roof, a signature feature of the original factory, is upgraded with a new metallic surface, enhancing its functionality while maintaining the building’s distinct silhouette. The roof, combined with the contemporary design elements, ties the past to the future, creating a space that reflects both CERMAC’s legacy and its forward-thinking approach.
